Section of a human cerebral cortex stained with toluidine blue.

The surface of the cortex is above and the medulla is below.

The neurones and the nuclei of neuroglia are basophilic. The cell bodies of the large pyramidal cells (arrows) occupy the mid-portion of this field.

A higher magnification of this mid-layer is seen in Figure 4.28.
