The individual nerve fibres appear as a multitude of osmiophilic rings around the unstained axons. Bundles of nerve fibres are separated by spaces which are artefacts resulting from fixation. The connective tissue layer surrounding the nerve is the perineurium (arrows). Stain: Osmium
