Section of a cervical ganglion stained with osmium.

The nuclei of the ganglion cells (N) are unstained but their nucleoli can be identified.

The osmiophilic Golgi bodies (G) are distributed around the nuclei. The other elements of the cytoplasm (i.e., the Nissl bodies, mitochondria, neurofilaments and neurotubules) are unstained.

The myelin sheaths (M) of nerve fibres are osmiophilic but the axons themselves (*) are unstained.
