Transverse section of the isthmus of a human oviduct.
The mucosa of the isthmus shows folds (arrows) of the mucosa. However, these folds are less abundant and less branched or foliated, compared with those seen in the ampulla. The submucosa shows a thick layer of smooth muscle fibres (*). Many large vessels (V) are seen beyond the muscular coat on the serosal side of the duct. Stain: Masson’s Trichrome
