• JavaScript: The World's Most Misunderstood Programming Language, an opinionated appreciation and critique by Douglas Crockford from 2001; see his 2008 The World's Most Misunderstood Programming Language Has Become the World's Most Popular Programming Language for a follow-up In 2001, Crockford recommended JavaScript: The Definitive Guide (5th Edition) by David Flanagan; in 2008 he published JavaScript: The Good Parts.

• jQuery is a cross-browser ‘fast, small, and feature-rich JavaScript library’ that ‘makes things like HTML document traversal and manipulation, event handling, animation, and Ajax much simpler’. The related jQuery UI provides interaction, animation, widgets, etc. I've used them with Thrwp'ny. Zepto is ‘minimalist’ and ‘largely jQuery-compatible’.
