L’antrum (An), qui contient du liquide folliculaire est entouré de nombreuses cellules folliculeuses (Fo) ou granuleuses.

Ces dernières entourent un oocyte (O) volumineux délimité par sa zona pellucida (ZP). Le noyau de cet oocyte contient des chromosomes aux contours diffus.

Dans le stroma une thèque interne (TI), à la périphérie du follicule, est composée de fibrocytes modifiés.
